Rarely are the most beautiful things, the most worthwhile things, easy to find. I have found, as a general rule, that one must venture off the beaten path to find anything sublime. This is true in all facets of life, camping included. This may explain the recent surge in conversion vans. Often 4x4 and fully equipped to go off-grid, these machines are designed to take you off the beaten path: and into the sublime.
The LEGO Volkswagen Type 2 is a superb example of this design philosophy. The interior was gutted and refitted with comfort in mind for the road less traveled. The dinette folds down into a bed allowing for a great night’s sleep. There is plethoric storage space, with drawers and cabinets everywhere. A storage rack on the roof adds even more utility. There is even a rooftop tent for even more room. The interior is retro inspired, from checkerboard floors to plaid drapes, everything is very ‘70s. But that’s the thing, this unit is not 50+ years old, it is a 2019 model, so there is no need to fear the maintenance that comes with old German vehicles. The yardage is low as well with only 65 yards on the odometer.
The feeling of driving the T2 is second to none, the cabin is spacious and features a bench seat. There is also a floor mounted manual transmission, making the driving experience truly an experience. Powerful four-bulb headlights will illuminate the way, no matter how dark. Beefy offroad tires coupled with upgraded suspension make this little VW able to go anywhere. 4x4 drivetrain means the T2 will go as far as you have the courage to push it.
Nothing worthwhile was done by following the crowd, to truly find what is worth finding you need to take the path less traveled by. No expressway will lead to something magnificent, instead you must forge your own path. The VW T2 will take you in whichever direction you point it, no matter what stands in its way.
